Craps Review

Screen shots of the games

Overview

Once the most popular table game offered in any casino (eclipsed by blackjack when the public became that the game could be beaten by utilising card counting strategies), Craps is still very popular and one of the few games in the casino to be played with dice.

Craps can be very confusing for a beginner with a mass of different bets and payouts available and a pace that’s likely to leave you feeling lost if you try to take it in all at once. Fortunately for you, there’s a very simple beginners bet that almost everyone plays and you can use while you are adjusting to the madness that is a Craps table.

Pass Line Bet

The Pass Line bet is made by almost every player. If you place a bet on the Pass line when a new shooter (person rolling the dice) makes their first roll the following can happen; if the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 you win and get paid even money, if the roll is a 2, 3, or 12 you lose and if any other total comes up the total is called ‘The Point’ (this means that the bet will be decided on a following roll).

The Pass Line bet is circled in red on the picture to the right. If a ‘Point’ comes out, the shooter will continue to roll the dice until either the same total comes out again or a 7 is rolled. If the 7 comes out first, you lose your bet. If the point comes out first you win your bet and are paid even money.

Pass Odds Bet

If a point is rolled, you’ll be offered the chance to place an additional wager on the point coming out again before a 7. When offered Pass Odds, you’ll usually be allowed to place a wager or 2-3x the amount you placed on the Pass Line bet. This amount varies from casino to casino so it’s best to check before you place the bet how much extra they allow you to wager. The results of this bet are determined in exactly the same way as the Pass Line bet. If a 7 comes out first the Pass Odds bet loses. If the point comes out first the Pass Odds bet wins. The only difference is that the odds on the Pass Odds bet vary depending on the value of the point. Below are a list of the different points and the Pass Odds bet odds you get for each.

  • 4 or 10 pays 2:1 (bet of $5 pays $10)
  • 5 or 9 pays 3:2 (bet of $5 pays $7.50)
  • 6 or 8 pays 6:5 (bet of $5 pays $6)

Come Bet

The Come Bet is exactly the same as the Pass Line bet, except it can be made after the initial roll breakout roll) has been made. As with the Pass Line bet, you can follow a Come bet with a Pass Odds bet.

Don’t Pass Bet

Almost the opposite of the Pass Line bet, if you place a Don’t Pass bet you lose if a 7 or 11 comes out, win and are paid even money if a 2 or 3 comes out, push if a 12 is rolled and if any other total comes out it is again called a point and the bet has to be resolved on subsequent rolls. With the Don’t Pass bet, the results are reverse with regards to points. If a 7 comes out before the point the Don’t Pass bet wins, if the point comes out first the Don’t Pass bet loses.

Don’t Pass Odds Bet

As with the Pass Odds bet, if a point is established the player then has the option to place a Don’t Pass Odds bet following a Don’t Pass bet of 2-3x the initial Don’t Pass bet. If the Don’t Pass bet wins, the Don’t Pass Odds bet will also win and it the Don’t Pass bet loses so will the Don’t Pass Odds bet. As with the Pass Odds bet, different points offer different odds on your additional wager which are shown below.

  • 4 or 10 pays 1:2 (bet of $5 pays $2.50)
  • 5 or 9 pays 2:3 (bet of $5 pays $3.33)
  • 6 or 8 pays 5:6 (bet of $5 pays $4.16)

Don’t Come Bet

The Don’t Come bet is exactly the same as the Don’t Pass bet except that it can be place after the breakout roll.

Buy Bets

A Buy bet has the same rules as a Pass Odds bet except it can be placed at anytime, not just following a Pass Line bet. The only difference is that this bet carries a 4-5% house commission. The commission can be charged on all bets or only the winning bets depending on the casino.

Lay Bets

Lay bets follow the same rules as the Don’t Pass Odds bet except they can be placed at any time, not just following a Don’t Pass bet. As with the Buy bets, the difference here is that the bet carries a 4-5% house commission. The commission can be charged on all bets or only the winning bets depending on the casino.
