What is BetBlocker?
BetBlocker is a free app designed to help players control their gambling.
Download the app onto your device, choose how long you want to restrict yourself from accessing gambling and the app will block you from going to thousands of gambling sites (over 5.9k at the time of publishing) until your restriction has concluded.
Where Can I get BetBlocker?
How much does it cost?
Nothing. The app is entirely free.
How many times can I download BetBlocker?
As many as you like.
Will it work on my device?
BetBlocker will run on the majority of Window, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS devices. There are always exceptions, but we do out best to find a way to help every user.
Can I remove a Self-Restriction after I’ve activated it?
No. Once activated you can only lift your restriction after your chosen restriction period has concluded.
Will you remove my Self-Restriction for me?
No. As with any addiction it is normal for the user to try and re-access gambling services after they put a restriction in place. BetBlocker is meant to take the choice out of the user’s hands. If we were to remove the restriction every time a user asked us to it would entirely undermine the protections that this service offers.
I’m selling my device/I bought a device with BetBlocker on it/somebody installed this without my permission – can you help me remove it?
No. In this situation all we can confirm is that someone with authorised access to the device activated BetBlocker. All we can recommend in this type of situation is that you are clear about what is on the device is you are selling it, speak to the person you bought it from if you bought it or ensure that only people who are authorised to make changes to your device have access to it in future.
Are there loads of adverts?
BetBlocker does not advertise anything.
What user data does BetBlocker collect?
As little as we can. You do not need to create an account to use BetBlocker and because we do not charge for the tool we do not need any financial or personal information about you.
We gather general data on the number of downloads that the app has received, we know how many active uses we have for the Android version of the app and we know the general data Google Analytics provides us about how many users are visiting the site and what they’re spending time looking at.
If you contact support through the app we gather a little more (app version number, device model code, restriction type.
We are well aware that users of BetBlocker are vulnerable and as such we minimise as far as possible the information we hold. By not gathering information we ensure that it can never be used for anything users would not be happy with.
Does BetBlocker guarantee I’ll not be able to access gambling after I activate an exclusion?
Absolutely not! BetBlocker is a tool to help you control your gambling, not a magic bullet to cure addiction. No matter how good a job we do there will always be some urls we’ve missed, bugs in the system or hacks that users can implement to get round the restriction. We cannot take responsibility for your actions after setting up a restriction, whether or not you’ve managed to access gambling due to bypassing our restriction or due to a bug or omission in our service.
Remember – BetBlocker is a tool to help you control your gambling, not a guarantee.
I’ve found a site that I can access while I have an active restriction in place. Why is that?
There’s two possible reasons:
i) This is a url we have not yet included on our restricted list. You should let us know by using the in a ‘Suggest a site’ tool or contacting us directly via email ([email protected]) or via the in app or on site contact forms so we can restrict it for all users. BetBlocker is constantly improved by our community of users. Actively reporting missed sites makes the tool better for everyone!
When we add a site to our restricted lists it will take 24 hours to reflect at the user end and you will need to restart your device. We add sites to the list every single day so it’s worth restarting your device regularly to ensure you’ve got the most up-to-date restriction list.
ii) There’s been a bug in our app or something on your device is conflicting with it. You need to contact support to get help! Contact us directly via email ([email protected]) or via the in app or on site contact forms. We are a (very) small team, but we do respond to every email and it is unusual for an email to have to wait longer than 24 hours for a response.
Why is BetBlocker Free?
ThePOGG.com has dealt with a large number of complaints dealing with Responsible Gambling issues. Some of the cases have been truly heart-breaking, but we haven’t always been able to help the complainants.
We looked around to see what tools and services were available that we could refer players to for help and were disturbed to see that without exception every filtering software available was charging users.
The sad truth is that the majority of people who have reached the point where they need help controlling their gambling have one thing in common: they’ve lost too much money. Asking these people to pay for help is often asking them to choose between money that they need to spend on food, clothing, housing or other life essentials and getting help. No matter how low, the price barrier will result in some users not being able to access the help and to make matters worse it is likely to be those most desperately in need of help that are excluded.
Alongside this we were uncomfortable with any commercial entity looking to profit from gambling addiction. Charging gambling addicts for help feels morally ambiguous to us.
So we set-up BetBlocker.
