Casino.com Finally Makes the Move on Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead

Posted by Glenn Baird on Dec 20, 2019

Take a look at casino.com’s homepage and you will see something slightly strange. In the top right-hand corner of a thumbnail for the Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead slot you will see a small green rectangle with the word “new” written on it.

You will see the small green rectangular box on countless numbers of slots that have made their way into casino.com’s catalogue of games, so why should this be something worth mentioning?

If you know anything about slots then you know what/who Rich Wilde is. You’ll know all about his Book of Dead and as such you will familiar with, not just Play ‘n’ Go’s most popular slot but one of the most popular slots of all time.

If you don’t know much about slots then all you need to do is look for a list of the most popular ones, the slots being played the most right now and you’ll find Rich Wilde, you’ll find his Book of Dead and most importantly of all, you’ll find him sitting proudly somewhere inside the Top 10.

Right now, at the time of writing this article, Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead sits at number 3 in the most played slots in the UK. Just above him you’ll find another couple of regular top-tenners in Bonanza Megaways and Starburst.

Those 3 slots have made their respective software designers lots of money and have cemented Net Entertainment, Big Time Gaming and Play ‘n’ Go as 3 of the biggest names in the world of video slots today.

I have reviewed a lot of slots and wouldn’t say that I rate any of those 3 games all that highly, but the truth is that their popularity has allowed their designers to go off and create some truly exceptional slots that I have plenty of time for.

What Makes Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead so Popular?

Truth be told, I don’t know exactly why people keep coming back to it. I honestly believe that there are better Rich Wilde slots than the Book of Dead, never mind better slots in general. For example, released this year, Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness was a much more exciting, much more immersive slot, but ultimately it came and went without much fanfare at all.

If I had to guess I would say it is because Rich Wilde was one of the first of a now very popular type of slot. The explorer, searching through ancient Egyptian tombs is one that you will see time and time again. The branded, double-barrelled, manly man name is a marketing tactic you will come across time and time again, the difference being that Rich Wilde got there first.

Along with being the first to the party, Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead is also a very simple game, something appears to be a requirement for a slot to go stratospheric: Just a few symbols, just a few features and pretty basic design, have all lent themselves to making this one of the all time most popular slots.

Simple and first do appear to be the name of the game if you want a slot that is picked and played time and time again. Starburst, Bonanza Megaways, Immortal Romance are all very simple slots but did what they do before just about anyone else.

What those three slots have is the Holy Grail. It is what every slot designer wants but knowing what the next big thing will be gets harder and harder, especially now that the market is well established.

In the case of Bonanza Megaways, Big Time Gaming brought us a new type of payline and they brought us the pay-to-play feature all at once. Yggdrasil, a slot company with one of the most outstanding back-catalogues will be hoping that their highly anticipated Splitz technology can do something similar for them.

As for Casino.com, I have no doubt that before long Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead will prove a worthy acquisition. As for going this long without it? Well, your guess is as good as mine.
