English Betting Shops to Reopen on 15 June

by Glenn Baird - May 26, 2020

Betting shops will begin reopening in England on the 15th of June as part of the government’s strategy to ease COVID-19 lockdown measures. It is important to note that these measures will only be in effect in England as the rest of the UK in not subject to the same judicial process.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has provided a list of all non-essential retailers that can open their doors to business as of the 15th of June. The full list that can be open from June 15, although some are already allowed to be open, includes:

  • Food retailers
  • Chemists
  • Hardware/homeware stores
  • Fashion shops
  • Charity shops
  • Betting shops and arcades
  • Tailors, dress fitters and fashion designers
  • Car dealerships
  • Auction houses
  • Antique stores
  • Retail art galleries
  • Photography studios
  • Gift shops and retail spaces in theatres, museums, libraries, heritage sites and tourism sites
  • Mobile phone stores
  • Indoor and outdoor markets
  • Craft fairs
  • Similar types of retail

Shops will be expected to put certain social distancing measures into place, which may include plastic screens, regular disinfecting ad hand washing, where applicable.

The reopening will coincide with Royal Ascot, which looks set to go ahead between the 16th and the 20th of June.

Most shops will not open at once as it is thought that there will be a staged re-opening throughout the year.
