Sex and advertising have been used synonymously to sell anything from cars to potato chips. However, Starwins.com failed to walk the narrow line between sexy and misogynistic and have consequently had their most recent advert banned by the UK Advertising Standards Agency.
The advert depicts a casino full of glamorous women, with a voice-over boasting of “real female croupiers” to keep the “card sharks” happy. Two men are transported to the casino with its bright lights, glitz and attentive female staff, who crowd around the two lucky guys, cheering when the chips inevitably fall for them.
The advert clearly has a demographic in mind and given the notoriety of the newspaper’s Page 3 ull-outs it’s unsurprising that they have failed to remain on the correct side of decency here.
Bear Group, who own Starwins.com objected to the advert’s ban, claiming that the women were dressed as croupiers and as such could not be deemed to be sexualised. However, despite the appeal the UK Advertising Standards Agency have upheld the ban and it has now been removed permanently from our TV screens.
