The Journey to the West slots game is produced by BetSoft. BetSoft are one of the smaller slot development companies on the market at the moment and have recently started offering their own casino platform. The company was founded in 2006, entering the slots market 4 years later. Betsoft do publish the Return to Player (RTP)/House Edge information for their slots games within the game help files. As such we know that the house edge for Journey to the West is 2.47%.
Journey to the East has 5 reels and each reel is 3 symbols high. The game uses 25 standard paylines, playing from left to right.
This slot has an Asian theme, and in this instance it focuses on the ancient fable about journeying from one side of China to the other. Some of the characters from that story make up the central symbols in this slot, with the Monkey King being the most important symbol in the game.
Wild – The “Monkey King” symbol is the Wild, which will substitute for all symbols and is responsible for triggering the only feature in the game. You need 3 or more of them on the reels at once to trigger the Journey to the West feature.
Journey to the West – If you land 3 or more of the “Monkey King” symbols on the reels at once you will trigger the Journey to the West feature, which will turn the “Monkey King” symbols into walking wilds. As long as there are “Monkey King” symbols on the reels the feature will be active. With each spin the Wilds will move one reel to the left. Each time a Wild symbol leave the reels to the left it will be added to the Meter of the Heavens, which will fill by one level. If more “Monkey King” symbols land the feature will continue and when no more are left to leave the reels on the left the feature will end. If you can fill the meter you will trigger an instant win. To fill the meter you will need 15 wild symbols to leave the reels.
Journey to the West is based on a particular Asian theme that I have seen used on slots before, one that gives the provider with a story that offers up lots of options for features. In this instance there is only the one feature, which is disappointing, but that one feature is a good one. There are no Free Spins as such, instead you are given a series of respins that, if you are lucky enough can become as good as a Free Spins feature. However, the chances of this happening are quite unlikely. The same feature also has the potential for a click and pick instant win. Again, you are going to need to get very lucky before you will get near to triggering this. Despite all this I do think that Journey to the West is an attractive enough slot and it comes with a seriously low house edge. At nearly 1% below the average, Journey to the West is offering outstanding value for money, helping to make up for the lack of features.
