The Hive slot is produced by BetSoft. BetSoft are one of the smaller slot development companies on the market at the moment and have recently started offering their own casino platform. The company was founded in 2006, entering the slots market 4 years later. Betsoft do publish the Return to Player (RTP)/House Edge information for their slots games within the game help files. As such we know that the house edge for The Hive is 3.03%.
The Hive has an unusual symbol formation that has been designed to look like a bee hive. The symbol height is arranged in the following way across the reels: 3, 4, 5, 4, 3. The slot uses paylines, with 30 in total playing from left to right and right to left.
This slot has a bee theme, which is why it is called “The Hive”, why it is shaped like a hive and why the features all involve bees and honey.
Wild – The “Honey Pot” symbol is the Wild, which will substitute for all symbols.
All the Bonus features are triggered through the introduction of bees hovering around the hive. Bees appear at random and the disappear at random too. Below you will see what each bee brings to the game:
The Queen Bee – The Queen Bee increases the number of other bees that hover around the hive. Whilst she doesn’t contribute anything directly, the presence of the Queen Bee should increase the chances of you triggering the other features.
Drone Bee – The Drone Bees are the ones carrying the pots of honey. When they appear they pour the contents of their pots into the Honey Meter. You need to fill the Honey Meter to trigger the Free Spins feature.
Worker Bees – The Worker Bees are the ones carrying the hammers. When they appear they will add a multiplier to any win. The more Worker Bees, the bigger the multiplier, with each one contributing plus 1 to it.
Free Spins – If you fill the Honey Meter you will trigger the Free Spins feature. You will be given 5 Free Spins in total. During the Free Spins 1, 2 or 3 Honey Burst Spreading Wilds will appear on the grid. Wilds will spread from their starting position to adjacent symbol spaces on the grid following each spin. This will happen on each of the 5 Free Spins
The unusual grid formation suggests that we are in for a treat with this slot. However, in all honesty this one flatters to deceive, failing to pack the punches that we would have hoped for. You get Wilds and you get Free Spins and your Free Spins come with a modifier. There are also multipliers, but essentially the key features are triggered at random, involving an aspect of the game that is not contained within those reels. However, the house edge is excellent, one of the most favourable that I have seen so far this month, which is enough for me to recommend it.
