Lucky in Love

Posted by THEPOGG on Feb 08, 2019

Love is in the air and in the spin of the reels that we will be bringing you today.

Valentine’s Day is your chance to show your significant other that you love them more than anyone else by doing what every other couple does on the 14th of Feb and engaging in a terrifying corporate induced panic attack to find that perfect, last minute gift that says I love you, but only on this particular day.

Even in the 2 dimensional, money thirsty world of the slot machine, simple fruits, bells and stars can sometimes find themselves substituted for symbols normally held dear for the greatest, most powerful of human emotions and experiences. If Hallmark can trade in hearts, roses and chocolates then so can casinos.

If you are an old romantic slots player then prepare yourself for an onslaught of pink and fluffy, of tales as old as times, of handsome Lotharios and damsels in distress.

But don’t get too comfy. Slots games might want to celebrate most cultural customs but they often do so without tradition entirely at the forefront of their thinking. To meet the needs of St Valentine we will be bringing you 10 slots games that take the boat to Love Island, each one steering a different and course to get there.

All of our games will have scored at least 7 out of 10 on initial review and all offer something a little bit different to your standard slots games.

Without wasting any more time, here are the 10 games that we at ThePogg think deserve a place on our Valentine’s Day list.

Dr Lovemore

Almost straight away I’m regretting starting with Playtech’s Dr Lovemore. Originally I thought that because this is only one of two games on our list to have the word love in the title it would make for a great beginning to our love journey. But, in this instance, “love” might be better replaced with “sleaze”. Dr Lovemore is all about the greasy hair, the shiny teeth and the …erm…pink boxer shorts. However, that’s the point isn’t it? To bring us an eye-raising laugh at those guys who don’t know quite as much as they think they do. The game has an excellent house edge, and nothing says I love you quite like thriftiness and an eye for a bargain. There’s champagne on ice, golden his and hers Mar and Venus symbols, along with various Valentines type gifts for Dr Lovemore’s little lady. You get Wilds and Free Spins to help keep the game engaging too.

Beauty and the Beast

The classic tale of unrequited love in the face of adversity is brought to us by Yggdrasil gaming, making their place on this list off the back of a perfect 10 out of 10 score. We all know the premise, ugly bloke was actually pretty once but did bad things, is made ugly and will remain that way until someone loves him for who he is not what he looks like. It is not often that you get a Disney adaptation turned into a slots game but Yggdrasil have done it and they’ve done rather well. There is a dramatic opening sequence that sets the scene, followed by suitably tense music as you spin those reels. The main characters are all there, minus the entirely Disneyfied candlesticks and teapots and to be frank, the game looks brilliant. There are some interesting bonuses and a decent house edge, all adding up to make for an exceptional game that fits our theme perfectly.

A Night in Paris

Welcome to the city of love. There are a few other games that are set in Paris but this is the one that does the city any justice and is any good to play. Betsoft released this game a few years ago now but it still looks as good any game you’ll see today. The city is at the centre of the game, love is probably not, but the game does come with an opening sequence that sees two loved ones head away from their romantic meal holding hands as they do so. One of the symbols is of a couple holding hands and staring into each other’s eyes and of course, the Eiffel Tower sits above it all, a landmark for love glistening in the background.

Crazy Cows

Our first game to enter from the very far leftfield is Play ‘N Go’s Crazy Cows. Whilst you might argue that this game is simply just mad, you could also argue that it is the most gender progressive game on our list. Whilst our sweethearts might be cows and whilst they might be performing crazy acts of bovine abandon, it is the lady cows who are doing all the chasing whilst Bully sits in his barn preening himself, trying to look as pretty as he possibly can. You play Crazy Cows for the sheer fun of it. The features are fun, the characters are fun and I guess if you win everything gets to be fun.

Bridesmaids

Whilst I couldn’t find a game that was about weddings I have found this offering from Microgaming that courts love through the eyes of those help to facilitate the life-long union that exists between a husband and wife. Bridesmaids is based on the 2011 film staring Kirsten Wiig and Maya Rudolph that taps into a female market, because you don’t get very many male bridesmaids. Lots of the elements of being a bridesmaid work their way into this game and pink is the colour of choice. Quite frankly, you will never have seen this much pink in a slots game before now. There are some interesting features that play really well to the game’s theme and the house edge is offering significant value for money.

Rapunzel’s Tower

It’s been three reviews since I leaned on my fairy tale support and about time for some traditional damsel in distress love. Hands up who knows the actual story of Rapunzel? That Rapunzel is a leafy vegetable. That a pregnant lady craved it and her husband was arrested for stealing it for her? That the baby was taken as payment then locked in a tower, long before a handsome prince climbs her hair and she falls in love with him? That their romance is thwarted, she is banished, has twins and raises them herself. He is blinded by the witch but searches for his love until one day the they meet again and live happily ever after? Who knew? Anyway this game celebrates that story of heroic fairy-tale romance by creating something that looks as good as any slots game you can find on this list. There is one very interesting feature and the house edge is reasonable.

Starlight Kiss

You want a romantic game? Microgaming’s Starlight Kiss is as romantic a game as you are likely to play. All the signposts that you might have stumbled your way into a Mills and Boons novel are there in swarthy, smoochy, steamy technicolour. There’s a handsome fella with great teeth and the perfect tan and there’s his beautiful lover whom he kisses in the moonlight with most of his shirt buttons undone. We must be in Italy, perhaps Spain, certainly somewhere warm enough to go outside at night with a half a shirt on. There are love letters, chocolates and roses all set inside the most perfect Much Ado About Nothing type of garden. There are interesting features and the house edge, whilst a little higher then we would ideally like, is offering decent enough value.

Reviving Love

Time for a quick detour down into Spinomenal’s back catalogue. We’ve had idyllic love, now set yourself for reanimated love. Instead of mourning the heartache that comes when our true love dies, this mad scientist is intent on stitching his flame back together and firing her with enough electricity that she comes back to life and they can continue their lives together. This is Tim Burton territory and our game is the most weird and wacky on our list, and remember that this is a list that has cows falling in love on it. The features are fun, as you try to help our hapless scientist rebuild his lost love, one decapitated limb at a time. The house edge is perhaps not as low as we would have hoped for, but the game is fun and worth a look if you fancy something a little bit different.

Immortal Romance

Keeping up the macabre love that we’ve just experienced, remember folks that a Vampire is not just for Valentine’s Day, it’s for eternity. Microgaming bring us one of their true classics, the only other game on this list to have scored a perfect 10 out of 10 from us on initial review. The game looks fantastic, with an interesting theme that has the features to match it. This is the type of game that you yourself might just end up falling in love with for a very long time.

Fairytale Fortune

Last on our list and our final Brothers Grimm inspired slots game is Fairytale Fortune. There is a damsel and a handsome prince to meet the required quota of romantic chemistry needed for this game to qualify for a place on our Valentine’s Day themed list. Add to that some unicorns and a dragon and I have to ask, what more could you possibly want? This is our only game to come from the Pragmatic Play stable and as with so many of their games it does not disappoint the eye. Along with looking good there are also a few interesting features to keep the game entertaining.

There you have it. A 10 armed love hug from some of our favourite slots designers. There were a few games that didn’t quite make it onto our list but do deserve an honourable mention. An obvious inclusion would have been Microgaming’s Dream Date, but as it only scored 6 out of 10 on initial review it didn’t quite cut the chocolate body paint. Cupid’s Strike, from Spinomenal might have ticked all of our boxes but with a house edge sitting at over 5% we just could not find enough room in our miserly hearts for a game failing to offer anywhere near what we would consider to be value for money.

I do not doubt that there must be games you think we have missed, so make sure you point those ones out to us, and who knows, maybe next year your suggestion will end up breaking the fairy-tale monopoly?

If you are celebrating Valentine’s Day make sure to set some time aside with the light of your life to go through our list and show with that one heart-felt gesture that your love holds no bounds. If you are on your own for Valentine’s Day then do not be sad because
not only do you lucky people don’t need to share the cake but you get to rest assured that everyone here at ThePogg loves you lots.
