80% of Advertising Budgets now Spent Online

It has been revealed that UK betting firms now spend much more on online advertisements than they do on any other advertising medium.
GambleAware, released numbers this weekend showing that gambling operators spent £1.5 billion on advertising in 2017, which sees the amount spent on marketing rise by well over 50% in the previous 3 years.
£747 million was spent on direct online advertising in the past 3 years, whilst the amount spent on social media was £149 million. The total spent on online marketing amounts to almost four-fifths of the complete marketing spend by gambling companies in the UK.
TV advertising, the source of potential self-imposed advertising restrictions, reached £243m in the past three years which is 15% of the total figure.
GambleAware CEO Marc Etches said the report “shows that much more attention needs to be paid to the extent of gambling-related marketing online, and that internet companies and social media platforms must share in the responsibility to protect children.”
The report comes on the back of the Gambling Commission’s release on the increase of the number of children engaging in online gambling that came out last week.
