Malta based betting group, Bethard, has announced that they will be leaving the UK market, just 2 years after being awarded a licence to operate in the country.
An announcement on their UK based site read quite simply:
“We’re leaving…”
”All gameplay will be blocked from the 06/07/2020.”
Customers will have until the 10th of August to withdraw any funds they currently have resting in accounts.
Bethard has clarified that their position in the UK was proving not to be profitable and that they were now going to focus their efforts on markets where they felt they could make money.
Bethard were awarded their UK licence back in 2018, something that needed to be delayed until their flagship brand ambassador, Zlatan Ibrahimović, left Manchester United to go play in the US league.
The high profile advertising campaign, featuring Sweden’s most famous sporting export was just one piece of an expansion project that saw the Bethard brand make serious strides over that last few years.
Their departure from the UK is not the first, with the likes of 188BET, Betclic Everest, ComeOn and Royal Panda all leaving recently. And whilst this may be the highest profile exit from the UK gambling market, it is unlikely to remain that way as tighter regulations await operators in the country.
