First Ever Gambling Treatment Centre for Women to Open

by Glenn Baird - December 16, 2020

In 2021 the English Midlands will see the world’s first treatment centre for women with gambling related problems open.

This comes in light of new research which suggests that more women than ever are actively gambling.

Studies by charity Gordon Moody Association claim that the need for treatment and support amongst female gamblers is now urgent.

The centre will support 24 women throughout the course of a year, where they will receive treatment and therapy to help with their gambling addiction.

Mobile casino company, InTouch Games Limited, has provided the funding needed to get the centre up and running.

“Gambling is the hidden addiction and hidden further again within that is the story of women gamblers and women who are affected by others,” said Gordon Moody CEO Matthew Hickey.

“There is an absolutely urgent need to change this and the impact of COVID-19 means this is a growing crisis that needs to be tackled with more expertise and resources.”

Hickey reported that in 2019 an increase of more than 100,000 women had started using the company’s website.

30% of calls made to gambling helplines were from women, with nearly 60% of those from women who were looking to find support for someone they were worried about.

“Gordon Moody Association has been addressing this challenge for a number of years through its retreat and counselling programme, and we now have plans to expand our treatment capacity within the next year to help urgently deal with this growing challenge,” added Hickey.

“But we feel this is just the beginning of what needs to be done and we will be arguing for much more capacity to be built and expert therapists to be trained in the future.”
