Temporary Licences a Non-Starter in Sweden

by Glenn Baird - December 21, 2018

With less than 2 weeks to go until online gambling gets the green light in Sweden, their main regulator, Lotteriinspektionen, has made it clear that no temporary licences will be distributed to those who have failed to gain a proper licence before the deadline.

Online gambling goes live on January 1st in Sweden with only operators who have been granted licence prior to that deadline gaining access to the market.

At the time of writing, 31 licences have been granted out of roughly 70 applicants. The application window has been open since August with a number of well-known operators already signed-up before things get started in the new year.

Some of the applicants who have been rejected a licence have had their request for temporary admission denied with Lotteriinspektionen stating that operators “may not provide games in Sweden until you have been licensed.”

This comes after Monday’s announcement from Lotteriinspektionen, where another 4 operators were added to the list of accepted applications, meaning that Bayton Ltd, Dumarca Gaming, Genesis Global Ltd and Enlabs AB join the already exclusive group of operators who will begin trade in Sweden next month.
