The Angenzia Delle Dogane E Dei Monopoli (AAMS) are the online gambling licensing authority for Italy. It should be noted that first and foremost any regulations put in place by this agency are only applicable to Italian citizens and that no operator can legally accept play from Italian citizens without holding a license with the AAMS.
The AAMS was set-up in 2010 by the Italian government to bring Italian law into line with EU legislation, allowing non-Italian gambling firms to access the Italian gambling market, a core foundation of the free trade agreements allowing membership of the EU. A maximum of 200 online gambling licenses are available at any one time, each firm applying for a license had to have had a minimum turn over of €1.5 million in the preceding two years and license fees are €350k/year.
Unfortunately the AAMS does not appear to offer any form of facility for player to access support if they encounter difficulties while playing with an AAMS licensed operator. To our mind this is a significant weakness in the Italian licensing system.
