A Christmas Carol Slot Review

The A Christmas Carol slots game is produced by BetSoft. BetSoft are one of the smaller slot development companies on the market at the moment and have recently started offering their own casino platform. The company was founded in 2006, entering the slots market 4 years later. Betsoft do not always publish the Return to Player (RTP)/House Edge information for their slots games within the game help files, meaning that we often need to refer to RTP provided by an operator. As such we know that the house edge for A Christmas Carol is 5.42%.

The A Christmas Carol game has 5 reels and each reel is 3 symbols high. The game uses traditional paylines, in this instance there are 25 in total, playing from left to right.

Special Symbols

Wild – The Wild symbol will substitute for all symbols other than Ghost feature symbols. The Wild symbol is also the most valuable in the game, with 5 earning you 2400 coins.

Christmas Past – The Christmas Past symbol is the yellow coloured ghost symbol. 3 or more of them will trigger the Past Winning Spins feature.

Christmas Future – The Christmas Future symbol is the blue coloured ghost symbol. 3 or more of them will trigger the Future Winning Spins Feature.

Christmas Present Wilds – The Christmas Present Wilds symbol is the green coloured ghost symbol. 3 or more of them will trigger the Present Wilds feature. They are only available during the Christmas Past or the Christmas Future features. When this does happen all Ghost symbols will be considered wilds.

Bonus Features

Past Winning Spins – 3 or more Christmas Past symbols anywhere on the reels will earn you Past Winning Spins. 3 will earn you 3 spins, 4 will earn you 6 spins and 5 will earn you 12 spins. These are essentially Free Spins and you can re-trigger them or trigger the Future Winning Spins feature, which will play out after the completion of the current Free Spins.

Future Winning Spins – 3 or more Christmas Future symbols anywhere on the reels will earn you Past Winning Spins. 3 will earn you 3 spins, 4 will earn you 6 spins and 5 will earn you 12 spins. These are essentially Free Spins and you can re-trigger them or trigger the Past Winning Spins feature, which will play out after the completion of the current Free Spins.

Double Up – After any win you can risk what you have earned by pressing the Double Up button. You bet half or all of your winnings and will win or lose based on the toss of a coin. You can attempt to double up as often as you like, at least until you lose. This not available after any Ghost feature wins.

Conclusion

A Christmas Carol is a story we all know and its influence is seen every single year, as Dicken’s image of Christmas has become our own image of what a Christmas should be. The story makes for the perfect slots theme, and I feel that BetSoft have done better than most to use it to their advantage. The features actually rely on the story, and whilst they are just Free Spins, at least they are Free Spins that hold relevance to the original narrative. I can’t help but feel that a few tricks have been missed (the two sets of Free Spins are identical) and that a bonus round would have been a nice touch, but at the same time this is probably the best looking, best thought-out A Christmas Carol themed slots game that I’ve seen before. All that said, the game is on the miserly side, offering very poor value for money. The house edge is far too high, meaning that Scrooge is living up to his name in the most disappointing of fashions.
