Aztec Bonanza Slot Review

Released March 2020

The Aztec Bonanza slot game can be found at casinos offering Pragmatic Play software. Pragmatic Play are one of the newer slots game developers on the market but their products are polished and professional in feel and operation. As a standard Pragmatic Play do publish the RTP/House Edge information for their slots games within their game help file. For a provider that are not currently licensed within the UK market and therefore are under no obligation to publish these figures this is a significantly progressive move. The House Edge for Aztec Bonanza is 3.47%.

Aztec Bonanza has an unusual reel formation, 5 reels in total with 2, 4, 6, 4, 2 symbols on each of them respectively. However, after 2 successive winning combinations you will unlock the top left-hand corner of the reels, made up of 3 symbols. The top right-hand corner will unlock with then next two winning combinations, then the bottom left and then the bottom right. If you manage to unlock all of the corners you will be playing on a 5x6 sized grid with 7776 different possible win combinations. In the base game you there are 384 different ways to win.

You form wins when you land matching symbols across 3 adjacent reels, playing from the left side of the grid. If you do form a win the symbols involved will disappear and new symbols will drop down, giving you another chance to win. The process continues as long as you keep landing wins and keep unlocking the different corners of the grid.

Theme

The theme of this one is the Aztecs, which means you have a temple and a totem pole in the background. The majority of the symbols are Aztec iconography and as with most slots that have a Aztec or an Incan theme you have tumbles and the accompanying sound of large tablets of stone sliding and crunching into place.

Special Symbols

Wild – There is no Wild symbol in this slot.

Mystery – The Mystery symbol is the “Golden Aztec”, which can only appear after you unlock the top left corner of the grid or randomly during the Free Spins. The Mystery symbols will all spin around to reveal the same matching symbol to give you a greater chance of being able to form a win.

Bonus Features

Symbol Unlocking – After every 2 successive tumble you will unlock a corner of the grid, as you do so you will also unlock additional features that remain dormant until you do so. Those additional features are:

Top Left Corner – When you unlock the top left corner of the grid you will unlock the Mystery symbol, which is described above.

Top Right Corner – When you unlock the top right corner of the grid you will turn 3 random low paying symbols with 3 random high paying symbols.

Bottom Left Corner – When you unlock the bottom left corner of the grid all the symbols on reels 1 and 2 will be replaces by giant 2x2 symbols.

Bottom Right Corner – When you unlock the bottom right corner of the grid all the symbols on reels 5 and 6 will be replaces by giant 2x2 symbols. After all subsequent wins have been played out you will trigger the Free Spins.

Free Spins – The Free Spins play out on a 5x6 grid with the full 7776 ways to win. You will be given 5 Free Spins, during which either the Mystery symbol, the symbol transform, or the Giant symbols on either the left or the right side of the reels will trigger on each spin.

Conclusion

Aztec Bonanza is everything we have grown to expect from this successful genre of slot with even more on offer than normal. Whilst there are no Wilds, the grid formation and the potential for tumbles almost make up for it. This is the sort of game that can feel as if nothing is happening for too long but when something does happen a lot ends to go down all at once. What I mean by this is if you can unlock one corner of the grid then the additional feature makes the next corner easier to unlock and so on. This can make for a very yingyang experience but I do believe that the lows are worth riding out and as the house edge is pretty low I would recommend this slot.
