Cherry Pop Slot Review

Released September 2020

The Cherry Pop slot is produced by Yggdrasil Gaming. Yggdrasil Gaming take their name from Norse mythology, emphasising their Scandinavian roots. The Yggdrasil is a magical tree where dragons lived and Odin sacrificed himself. Yggdrasil Gaming have quickly established themselves as a consistent developer of quality slots. They lease their games out to casinos using other platforms as a bolt on package. Yggdrasil Gaming publish the Return to Player/House Edge of their slots games within the game help file. The House Edge of Cherry Pop is 3.8%.

Cherry Pop is a 5 reel slot, with each of the reels containing 3 symbols. Instead of paylines you form wins when you land 3 or more matching symbols across adjacent reels. The PopWins feature will see the size of the reels increase, something that will be explained in the features section of this review.

Theme

There is no obvious theme to this slot. This is essentially a fruit machine. However there is a lot of neon on display, creating something that feels like a more modern version of an 80s theme.

Pop Wins Mechanic – Every time a symbol forms a win it will disappear, leaving behind two empty symbol spaces, which are then filled with 2 new symbols. Essentially you are increasing the size of the reel that the winning symbols land on by 1 symbol space each time. This will subsequently increase the number of winways, which if you can expand each reel to its maximum of 9 symbol spaces will reach 59, 049, compared to the 486 the game starts with. As long as you keep landing wins the size of the reels with continue to increase, up to a maximum of 7 symbol spaces. The reels will reset once you fail to land any subsequent wins.

Special Symbols

Wild – There is no Wild symbol in this slot.

Super High – The Super High symbol is the “Cherries”. They are only available during the Free Spins feature.

Bonus Features

Free Spins – If you can generate enough Pop Wins to expand each of the reels to 6 symbols in height then you will trigger the Free Spins feature. In the Free Spins feature reels can reach 9 symbols height, compared to the maximum of 6 in the base game. You will be awarded 5 Free Spins. However, you can choose to gamble them. To do this you must spin the Gamble Wheel. This is a binary option, you win or you lose. Lose and the feature never begins, win and you will be given 8 Free Spins. You can gamble twice, winning up to 12 Free Spins if you win both gambles.

Multiplier – The Free Spins begin with a 2x multiplier. Each winning pop-round will increase the multiplier by 1 for the following spin. Unlocking all the reels will increase the multiplier by 3. If you get this far every winning pop-round after will increase the multiplier by 3.

Bonus Buy – At any point you can choose to pay to play the Free Spins. This will cost you 75x the bet and will come with the option to gamble in order to increase the number of spins you get. This feature will not be available in all jurisdictions.

Conclusion

Following on from Pop Rocks and Wild Pops, Cherry sees Yggdrasil head back for more of their Pop Wins mechanic and like that aforementioned slots Cherry Pop is pretty much all about that single feature. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good feature and modifiers like the multiplier and expanding reels help to make it even more engaging. I definitely feel like Cherry Pop is less one dimensional than Pop Rocks and it comes with a competitive enough house edge for me to recommend it.
