The Dark Vortex slots game is produced by Yggdrasil Gaming. Yggdrasil Gaming take their name from Norse mythology where Yggdrasil is a magical tree where dragons lived and Odin sacrificed himself. Yggdrasil Gaming are one of the smaller slot development companies on the market at the moment – primarily focusing on lottery and scratch card game – and do not offer a full casino platform. They lease their games out to casinos using other platforms as a bolt on package. Yggdrasil Gaming publish the Return to Player/House Edge of their slots games within the game help file. The House Edge of Dark Vortex is 3.50%.
Dark Vortex is a 5 reel game that is 3 symbols high. The game uses winways and there are 243, playing from both left to right and right to left. Those winways increase when you open up the Vortex.
Wild – The Wild symbol is a stone tablet with “Wild” written on it and will substitute for all symbols other than Vortex and Orb symbols. The Wild symbol is only available on reels 2, 3 and 4.
Blue Orb – These symbols are available when you trigger any part of the Vortex. They can appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, when any of those reels are active within the Vortex. You receive 5 automatically when the Vortex opens and collecting them will award free spins. Every Blue Orb collected will result in a free spin at the end of the Vortex Spins if you have expanded the Vortex to fill all 5 reels.
Pink Orb – These symbols are only available when the full Vortex has been triggered. They can appear on reels 1 and 5, when reels 1 and 5 are active within the Vortex. You receive 2 automatically when the Vortex opens and they will extend the Wild Stack size. When the Vortex Spins are over, if you have expanded the Vortex to fill all 5 reels the number of Pink Orbs you have collected will be turned into a row of Wild Symbols.
Vortex Symbols – The Vortex symbol is a large gold circle with ornate markings all over it. Revealing 2 or more of them will open up the game’s Vortex. Every reel where a Vortex symbol appears (as long as there are at least 2 on the reels) will increase the number of winways that are available and you’ll also be granted 3 Vortex Spins. Every Vortex symbol you reveal during the Vortex spins will give you 2 more Vortex Spins and if they appear on a new reel then they will further increase the winways.
Opening Vortex Reels – As I’ve already explained, you open Vortex Reels by revealing Vortex symbols. Doing so will increase winways, the number of orbs, wilds and the number of high paying symbols.
Expanding the Vortex – Once the Vortex is open, you can expand it by revealing Vortex symbols on reels adjacent to the Vortex. This will increase the size of the Vortex. If you can expand the Vortex to fill all 5 reels then you will trigger the game’s free spin feature. The number of Free Spins you receive will be the same as the number of Blue Orbs you have collected.
Buy Bonus Feature – At any point in the game you can pay 800 coins to activate the Buy Bonus feature. When this happens you will have two sets of tiles to flip before the bonus actually begins. First, you need to flip a tile that will determine how many Wilds are stacked in reels 2, 3 and 4. You can reveal anything from 2 to 10 in a single stack. There are 5 tiles to choose from. You then have to choose which tile to flip to determine how many spins you have. You can reveal anything from 5 to 20 spins and you, once again, have 5 tiles to choose from.
Dark Vortex is another stunning looking game from Yggdrasil. The software developers never fail to deliver when it comes to how good a game looks and in this instance they’ve done themselves proud with an offering that hits the market just in time for Halloween. The symbols are detailed, some containing small animations that help bring the game to life. The background is suitably spooky and also looks fantastic. There are wilds and an interesting free spin option. The increased winways are also a nice touch and the inclusion of the Vortex itself means there is plenty going on here to retain your attention. The game also comes with a Buy Bonus, which is there for players who like to spend big, take bigger risks and head straight to the good stuff. Anyone considering triggering the Buy Bonus feature must consider the risk beforehand, as 800 coins is a lot to give up just to play a bonus. The game comes with a reasonable house edge of 3.5%, which is just about what we would consider to be average. However, that changes for the better during the Buy Bonus feature, dropping to 3%.
