North Storm Slot Review

Released December 2019

The North Storm slot game can be found at Microgaming casinos. Microgaming as a standard now publish the house edge information of all their slots at any online casino that holds a UKGC license (this is a requirement for all UKGC licensed casinos). As such we can say that the House Edge of North Storm is 3.87%. When playing at any venue that does not hold a UKGC license and does not specifically publish the Return to Player information for their game, this information should be used as a guideline only as we cannot confirm whether or not this game is configurable.

Theme

North Storm is a Viking themed slot. This is normally a successful venture for slots developers with our cousins from the north bringing something to the reels that most other themes fail to deliver. In this instance you have the mountains and the freezing cold weather all painted with a fairly restrictive palette of greys, blues and silvers. The cold world is reflected in the cold colours and you know as soon as you open the game that this is slot for those made of tougher stuff.

North Storm is a 5 reel game that is 3 symbols high. The game uses traditional paylines, with 25 in total playing from left to right.

Special Symbols

Wild – The “Wolf Head” symbol is Wild, substituting for all symbols other than Free Spins symbols.

Free Spins – The Free Spins symbol is the “Viking Head”. 3 or more of them next to each other on a payline will trigger the feature. Unlike most slots the Free Spins will not trigger if the 3 symbols land anywhere on the reels. If you land an additional set of Free Spins on another payline you will be given 2 more spins, up to a maximum of 20 Free Spins.

Bonus Features

Bonus Fall Feature – Every time you land a winning combination the symbols involved will disappear and new symbols will drop down into place, giving you another chance to win. This process can in theory continue indefinitely, but once you fail to land a win it will end. With each Bonus Fall you will increase a multiplier by 1. It begins at x1 after the initial fall and will hit a maximum of x4 the bet.

Free Spins – If you trigger the Free Spins feature you will receive a minimum of 8, up to a maximum of 20 Free Spins. The feature cannot be re-triggered. The multiplier that comes with the Bonus Fall feature is in play and this time is worth double what it is woth in the base game. So, the initial fall is worth x2 the bet, and it will increase by 2 with each fall, up to a maximum of x8 the bet.

Conclusion

I was pretty excited when I saw that Microgaming were working with RabCat on this one as I’ve been impresses with their previous output. In my previous experiences with RabCat games I’ve found slots that are beautifully designed. I also find that they tend to design slots that take themselves very seriously. You won’t find any cartoon characters and the colours tend to be dark as well. This slot ticks all those boxes and does so in style. This is an excellent looking slot. However, the features are a little on the drab side. You get Free Spins, Wilds, tumbles and a multiplier with those tumbles. That is a solid bunch of features but I really wanted more. I also don’t like how hard it is to trigger the Free Spins and the fact that they don’t re-trigger is also a little disappointing.
