Rise of Merlin Slot Review

Released: June 2019

The Rise of Merlin slot game can be found at casinos offering Play ‘n Go software. Play ‘n Go are a growing providers in the industry and have a rapidly expanding portfolio of both slots games and clients. They do offer a full casino platform, but primarily seem to be used as a bolt on package for extra slots games. Play ‘n Go do publish the Return to Player (RTP)/House Edge information for their slots games within the game help files. As such we know that the house edge for Rise of Merlin is 4%.

The Rise of Merlin slot game has 5 reels and each reel is 3 symbols high. The game uses traditional paylines, with 10 in total playing from left to right.

Special Symbols

Wild – The Wild symbol is the “Crystal Ball” and will substitute for all symbols. The Wild symbol is also one of the most valuable in the Rise of Merlin slot game.

Scatter – The Wild “Crystal Ball” symbol also happens to be the game’s Scatter symbol and will trigger the Free Spins feature if you can land 3 or more of them on a single spin. This also means that the “Crystal Ball” will pay out regardless of paylines, making it the most important symbol in the Rise of Merlin slot game.

Free Spins – If you can land 3 or more Scatter symbols then you will be awarded with 8 Free Spins. Before the feature begins a symbol is chosen at random to become a special expanding symbol. This cannot be the “Crystal Ball”. When enough of the symbols land to form a win they will expand to fill the reels completely. The feature can be retriggered, awarding an additional 8 Free Spins if you land 3 or more “Crystal Ball” symbols on a single spin during the Free Spins. If this does happen an additional symbol will be chosen at random to become an expanding symbol.

Gamble – You can choose to gamble any time you land a win. You need to guess the colour of a card taken from a standard deck that is facing down. Guess correctly and you will double your win. Get it wrong and you will lose all your winnings. You can choose to gamble up to a maximum of 5 times on a single win.

A game like Rise of Merlin holds a lot of promise. You expect a slot game with this title to look, well…magical, I guess. In truth Play ‘N Go do a pretty good job doing just that, bringing us symbols and a background filled with all the colour and magic you could ask for. You also expect there to be a host of stunning bonus features, but in this instance Rise of Merlin is a bit of a let down. All you really get are Free Spins and the expanding symbol that comes with them. You have a Wild symbol that is also a Scatter but there is nothing else here to get very excited about. This slot is calling out for a bonus or some random features but is in reality a very simple slot game. The house edge is what we would expect from Play ‘N Go and as such the good news ended with the game’s good looks.
