Wicked Tales: Dark Red Review

Released: September 2018

The Wicked Tales: Dark Red slots game can be found at Microgaming casinos. Microgaming as a standard now publish the slots house edge information of all their games at any online casino that holds a UKGC license (this is a requirement for all UKGC licensed casinos. As such we can say that the House Edge of Wicked Tales: Dark Red is 3.9%. When playing at any venue that does not hold a UKGC license and does not specifically publish the Return to Player information for their game, this information should be used as a guideline only as we cannot confirm whether or not this game is configurable.

Wicked Tales Dark Red is a 5 reel game that is 3 symbols high on 2 reels, with the remaining 3 reels all being 4 symbols high. The reels are classed as Wandering, meaning that there are the 3 main reels that stick in place, whilst the other 2 reels move around either side of the main 3. There are 25 paylines in total, paying from left to right.

Special Symbols

Wild – The wild symbol is the “Dark Red” symbol, replacing all symbols other than Scatters. Only one winning combination is paid out per payline. If there is more than one winning combination, the highest will be paid out.

Scatter – The “Full Moon” symbol activates the game’s “Wolf Wheel” bonus feature and they pay out in combinations of 3 or more when they appear anywhere on the reels.

Bonus Features

Wolf’s Wheel Bonus – The bonus is triggered when you land 3 or more of the “Full Moon” symbols anywhere on the reels. When this happens you get to spin the “Wolf’s Wheel” and have a chance to trigger a further 2 different features or win a bet multiplier of up to 20x the bet.

Forest of Fortune – You can trigger this feature if you land the “Treasure Chest” on the “Wolf’s Wheel Bonus.” When this happens you will be taken to a new section of the game where you will need to unlock chests for a chance to win a cash amount. The bonus will end when you find one that is empty or when you have won 10 cash prizes in a row.

Free Spins – You can trigger the Free Spins feature when you land one of the high value symbols on the “Wolf’s Wheel”. You will be awarded 9 free spins that cannot be re-triggered. Whichever symbol you land on will replace all other high value symbols, with the “Female” symbol being the most valuable.

Closing Thoughts

Wicked Tales: Dark Red is a fantastic looking game that sees the player enter the world of “Little Red Riding Hood”. However, in this instance the classic fairy tale has been re-imaged, with the central character being a much older, much more voluptuous and much less frightened woman. The wolf is a proper werewolf and the moon is out in all its resplendent beauty. The animated sequences between parts of the game look absolutely stunning, with obvious time and care being put into making this game look as good as possible. The wandering reels are a really nice touch, helping to bring the reels to life and make it feel as though something is always happening when you press the spin button. The music is suitably creepy and the bonus features are varied and relatively plentiful. You have a flip and reveal bonus along with free spins and the usual wilds and scatters. The only points of criticism for the game are the lack of re-spins and the above average house edge, which is a shame, given how good everything else is.
