Top Ten Driving Themed Slots

Posted by Glenn Baird on Aug 09, 2019

This week sees the release of what, if my sums are to be trusted, must be the 9th instalment in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise. However, as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is keen to point out “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” is not just “Fast & Furious 9”. That is because filming has already started on “Fast & Furious 9” but “Hobbs and Shaw” (Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham) will not be in it.

In a recent interview with MTV Johnson can be quoted saying: “The plan has always been for the Fast & Furious universe to grow and expand,” And he goes on to confirm that “As of now, we’re not in Fast 9 because they’re getting ready to start shooting.”

However, Johnson also explained that all might not be lost for “Hobbs and Shaw” in the main part of the franchise: “But who knows with Fast 10 and down the road,” Johnson continued. “You never know. Because look, at the end of the day, the truth is, there’s unfinished business between Hobbs and Dom. It’s unfinished.”

Rumours surrounding a break-down in the relationship between Johnson and the series producer and one of its biggest stars, Vin Diesel have been stirring since 2016. Diesel has played a part of the franchise since its conception, all the way back to 2009, raking up appearances in all 8 of the incarnations to date (excluding the “Hobbs and Shaw” spinoff), with further starring roles in both the 9th and the 10th to come.

Now a series producer, Diesel clearly has more than just an actor’s part to play in the franchise, but this increased position of power didn’t put Johnson off when it came to speaking his mind, labelling the cast of the franchise as “Candy Asses” in a 2016 Instagram post before confirming later on in an interview with Rolling Stone that the insult had been meant specifically for Diesel:

“Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer,” Johnson said. “And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.”

With none of that cleared up fans are left unsure as to whether or not relative newcomer Johnson will appear in another Fast & Furious film after this one. Having joined the series for the fifth instalment, Johnson may have become as permanent a fixture as wallpaper but if this apparent feud continues then there can be little doubt that Vin Diesel, who is as permanent as the walls the paper sits on, will have the final say.

As for the spin off, what exactly can we expect and what makes it different from the 8 “Fast & Furious” films that proceed it? Idris Elba for a start. And not just any Idris Elba, we’re talking a genetically enhanced cyborg Idris Elba, one so damn evil that instead of driving a car like everyone else in these films, he rides a motorbike. If you have been following the film’s promotional circus or if you’ve seen the trailer then you’ll already be familiar with one of the film’s infamous lines, delivered by Elba, where he proclaims that he is the “Black Superman.”

You can also expect stuff to explode, bad guys to get beaten up, with a certain Mr Statham turning everyday objects like a toaster into simple hand-held bludgeoning devices. You can expect to see a fair amount of the world with London and Samoa two prime locations for the majority of the action. And of course, it wouldn’t be a testosterone and petrol fuelled extravaganza without some witty one liners and a fair amount of rib-cracking banter.

If you want some cynicism you can expect no Oscar nominations, you can expect 3 star reviews and you can expect a bladder bursting run-time of over two hours. You are also likely to witness loose plot strands and no doubt there will be a whole host of things in general that just don’t add up.

I for one am no fan of the franchise but then, who am I to argue with a series of films that will hit at least 11 iterations and continue to return heavy profits and fill cinemas on their release. I do think that this looks a bit better than some of the films that have come before it. There appears to be less of a reliance on the fast and modified cars with a much more heavy lean on the traditional action movie. This looks like the sort of film that Arnie would have been cast in during the early 90s. The sort where he resembles the characters that he played throughout the 80s, the ones where he defined the role of the Hollywood action hero, but without all the serious faces and a few more badly timed jokes thrown in.

Driving Slots

In keeping with the film’s central concern, I have decided that we can honour the Fast & Furious with a list of the best driving themed slot games out there. To meet the brief we are not asking too much really, just the inclusion of a car somewhere in the slot. In fact, in keeping with the new film I am even allowing the inclusion of a motor bike game or two.

There weren’t a huge number of slots to choose from , however I have still managed to find 10 that all received an impressive 7 out of 10 or more on initial review, meaning there are enough slots out there for us to compile a list of the Top Ten Driving Themed Slots out there today.

Buckle up and prepare for some high-octane, adrenaline fuelled spins, as we bring you the Top 10 Driving Themed Slots.

Drive

Drive was released by Net Entertainment back in 2017 and has all the hallmarks of an illicit street race. There are shady characters, with cigar smokers, eccentric mechanics and feisty women, all gearing up to the hit the streets at night and find those ever-elusive cans of precious Nitro. Obviously the slot is well designed and comes with a solid base of features, the standout being the Free Spins. As you will notice with quite a few of the games on this list the music is typically electronic, echoing the soundtrack of an early Tom Cruise movie. This is a fun, slick-looking slot and the perfect way to kickstart this list.

#Luxury Life

Yes, this slot really does have a hashtag in its title. Whilst cars aren’t at the forefront of this Endorphina slot, they do play a significant part. This slot is all about having money. Lots and lots of money and then taking that big pile of cash and spending it expensive items, like luxury cars. One of the symbols in this game is a non-descript super car, making it meet the brief by the skin of its teeth. #Luxury Life was released last year by Endorphina and is fairly typical of their most recent slot games. The game is well-designed and the features are relatively simple.

Narcos

The cars in Narcos might not be as fancy as those you might find in #Luxury Life, but after all the documentaries and TV shows we’ve consumed about Pablo Escobar there can be no doubt that if he wanted a fleet of them that he could have had a fleet of them. One of the central features to this game is called “Drive By”, a random feature that if triggered will throw a pile of random Wilds onto the reels. You also need the “Car” symbol to trigger the Free Spins feature, making the art of driving the get-away vehicle central to this Net Entertainment slot.

The Wild Chase

The thing I love about Quickspin is I always know what I am going to get and I am almost never disappointed by the results. Quickspin games always look the part and this high speed chase themed slot is no exception. There is little here for you not to like and the central narrative of things is also one that most of us enjoy. You have a set of good looking cons who have to make away at high speeds with an array of stolen treasures. You get Free Spins and one additional bonus, maintaining the simplicity that I have come to expect from a Quickspin slot.

Nitro Circus

I said that there might be bikes on this list and I’ll assume that when I did a few of you guessed that Nitro Circus would be the slot in question. If it is good enough for the “Black Superman” then it is good enough for us. Nitro Circus is an absolute blast of a slot. Yggdrasil nailed this slot when they released it towards the end of last year. It has absolutely everything you want in a slot as long as you don’t want simple. Strap on that crash helmet and be prepared to be blown away.

Jack Hammer and Jack Hammer 2: Fishy Business

That’s right, the next two places on our list are being grouped into the one because I am going to include both of the Jack Hammer slots. These two Net Entertainment slots scored big for us when they were first reviewed, with the 2nd instalment released all the way back in 2012. Both slots rely on cars as either Jack Hammer’s pursuit vehicle or as the escape car for the criminals that he is chasing. The two games are easy to lump together because they are so similar. However, the second game has a more favourable house edge and comes with even more paylines. Fans of Dick Tracy and prohibition themed crime will love both of these slots.

Reel Steal

Reel Steal is based around a typical 70s heist movie. Some the symbols have characters on them, with one in particular resembling Steve McQueen in “Bullet”. There are leather jackets with wide collars, moustaches, wide brimmed hats and great big rumbling V8 engines. There are bags of swag, briefcases with huge gems, fake passports and cameras without display screens. New York sits at the centre of the slot, with the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline both projected in the background of a couple of the symbols. Unlike the crooks you don’t get a whole lot here. Just some Free Spins and a slot that fully commits to its theme.

Wacky Races

This game is as Wacky as the TV show was and every one of your favourite characters is here and each one comes with their own unique feature. Unlike a few of the slots on this list Wacky Races is very much a feature heavy game. There is a tonne of stuff going on all the time to keep you well and truly engaged throughout. The car part of the slot doesn’t need to be pointed out, just the fact that this is a great slot from WMS Gaming, fully deserving of a place on this list.

Hotline

Last but not least, we have Hotline. Yet another Net Entertainment slot, one that up there with the very best games already mentioned. The slot looks as though it could have been styled by the makers of “Beverly Hills Cop” or “Miami Vice”, with similar colours and design, along with sunsets, palm trees and the all-important 80s supercar. We’ve had the 70s on this list. We’ve had the 20s and 30s and now it is time of the 80s to shine. Ostentatious as anything that came out of that decade, we love this game for reasons that make no sense in a world of excess. What we loved most about Hotline then and now is the low house edge. Not the features or how it looks but the fact that despite all the fast cars, this is a slot that offers good value for money.

As usual there were a few games that could have justified a place on this list and I am sure that there are some I have missed that you think should have been included. Net Entertainment are a big player in this particular theme, making up half the entries on the list in total. Despite this we saw some smaller developers make it onto the list, with a decent spread of scores, even one with the full 10.
